The Junior League of Cleveland began a new tradition to honor the pageantry and tradition of the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby by hosting an elegant party themselves on Saturday, May 5, 2007. The first Kentucky Derby party proved to be a tremendous success with members, friends and guests.

Board member Colleen Scrhal estimates 130 guests attended the event, and more than 50 local business donated items. The event was expected to raise $5000 and will fund signature events for Junior Women’s League.
Guest played their luck at several gaming tables and won tickets to the Chinese Raffle to win one or several of the thirteen great prizes like four tickets of the Botanical Gardens, or a three month membership to Curves. Or they could buy and name a horse for the “Night at the Races” for only $20. Gretchen Bowmen won the Hat Parade contest for her “Derby Delight”. The hat showcased a miniature Kentucky Derby Race. She won a $40 gift certificate at the Marengo Luxury Spa at the Arcade, Downtown Cleveland.
Local florists donated centerpieces for each table, which were available for purchase at $20. Guest cheered as they watched the Derby Race Live and enjoyed delicious entrees. Plans for next years Derby party are already underway.
The JLC’s main projects include: Done in a Day, Girls Make Great Leaders, Kids & Seniors, and Touch a Life. The Sustainer Members of The JLC also have a project they’re involved in called Reading is Fun.
