La Prensa Newspaper is a weekly Spanish bi-lingual newspaper that has been publishing since 1989 from Michigan. The newspaper is distributed throughout Michigan and Ohio with a weekly circulation of 12,000.

But learn English he must, to find a job and provide for his wife and two kids.Having moved from Puerto Rico in search of work he joined an extended family in Cleveland but

Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center’s Reinberger Auditorium transformed into a glitzy red carpet fashion runway on Jan. 16, 2011 attracting more than 200 people.

Enforcing positive self-image in young ladies is a difficult task; one that Yasin Cuevas undertook with exceptional grace. A model and teacher from Puerto Rico, Cuevas saw a void in Cleveland and sought to make a difference. She reached out to Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center and created a curriculum to teach girls 11 to 17 years old the skills of refinement, etiquette, style, and fashion sense, for free! (more…)

United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was the guestspeaker at theCleveland Legal Aid Society’s (LAS) annual dinner on Sept. 10, 2010. More than 1,200 members of the Legal Society, Latino leadership, and community members attended the dinner held at the Renaissance Hotel.

In the two days Justice Sotomayor spent in Cleveland she met personally with law students from Cleveland State and Case Western Universities, lawyers, community leaders, and the judges of the U.S. District Court. The Hispanic Roundtable also hosted the Judge for a breakfast with prominent Latino leaders, enlightening her about the community’s needs and challenges. (more…)

Cleveland: As Cuyahoga County makes drastic changing in its governing system, Latino leaders made sure the community was informed and its voice heard by those making recommendations and the candidates likely to implement the changes.

More than 60 undocumented immigrants stood at the altar of Nueva Luz Church of the Nazarenefighting back tears and silently pleading for support in their hope to reform immigration policies.

Toddlers and adults leaned on each other as they held sings requesting raids be stopped, deportations halted and families kept intact.

Nine international guests from Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay, and Venezuela were welcomed by nearly 150 guests at La Boca to discuss the impact of economic globalization, trade and get acquainted with Cleveland Latino leaders.

Cleveland: The Mental Health Services (MHS) Community Women’s Shelter held a fundraiser on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Gordon Square Arcade. On average, the center is a sanctuary for 130 women and children per night and the economic realities have only increased demands on the shelter in recent years. The shelter was founded in 1988 to serve severely mentally-disabled, homeless adults and has increased its services to provide drug rehabilitation. (more…)

One hundred-fifty people from Cleveland, Ashtabula, and Lake counties filled Nueva Luz Church in Cleveland on Jan. 14, 2010, to affirm support for immigration reform, while three protestors stood outside holding signs against amnesty. Hand in hand, leaders and activists from the Latino, African-American, Asian-American, Jewish, and Muslim communities prayed for immediate and just changes in immigration laws, and for the victims of Haiti’s earthquake of Jan. 12, 2010.

On Jan. 16, more than1,600 people marched for reform in front of Hartwell Country Club in Cincinnati. In cities across the United States, Reform Immigration for America has mobilized similar rallies to remind the Barack Obama administration to fulfill its campaign promise, and make immigration a priority this year. (more…)

Washington, D.C., Jan. 18, 2009: The Latino Inaugural Gala hosted 3200 guests from around the nation at Union Station. Elected officials, Hollywood stars mingled with Latinos from every walk of life at an exuberant party. Tickets sold out at $200 per person, and all proceeds raised were donated to the vision of a National Museum of the American Latino in Washington D.C.  (more…)

Washington, D.C., Jan. 21, 2009: The sun shone brightly on U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama’s first official day in office on Jan.  21, 2009, as  immigration reform activists marched 800 strong in front of the Immigration & Custom Enforcement (ICE) headquarters in Southwest Washington.

The participants demanded Obama end raids against the 12 million undocumented immigrants and pass a solution that would grant a path to citizenship or at least provide work authorization for non-criminals.

Washington, D.C., Jan. 20, 2009: The last time Angie Gaston stepped out of Cleveland was in 1987. The moment President Barrack Hussein Obama won the election she knew she would be part of the 2 million in Washington, D.C., to watch Obama take the oath.

“I did what I had to do—cleaned houses and what not just to save enough to get there,” said Gaston. She arrived at the National Mall at 5:00 a.m. with her daughter and set up station next to a young man with three kids.

Cartoonist Héctor D. Cantú has a flair for blending humor with culture to combat racial stereotypes through his comic strip Baldo.

 

As a young comic enthusiast Cantú often marveled at the absence of Latino comic characters. “Instead of waiting for someone else, I decided to create my own,” Cantú told 85 people at Cleveland State University’s Mather Mansion on Oct. 15, 2008. His first comic was published at age 12, in a newspaper published by his brother.

Latin jazz blasted through the speakers and echoed in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s parking garage as enthusiastic guests showed off their Latin grooves on August 15, 2008. More than 400 people attended the free Garage Grooves summer jazz series, presented by CMA.

The Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project performed a collection of songs, some composed by the late Roberto Ocasio who founded the band. Musical Director Eric Dregne said the band’s music is rooted in jazz and drives its influence from the likes of George Gershwin but it is also embraces a fusion of Latin salsa and mambo. Roberto Ocasio’s work and legacy is still appreciated through his musical works.

 

“He was loved by everyone,” said Sol Shack as he danced his heart out. “Roberto was a fantastic performer, composer and director and the band is still wonderful because they are following his vision,” Shack said.

Loyal Republicans had it easy on March 4, 2008 as Ohioans and Texans made their way to the polls to select their nominee for President of the United States.

The Democrats on the other hand were scrambling frantically to sway undecided voters in their favor. The city hosted an internationally televised, intense debate between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama at Cleveland State University on Feb. 26, 2008.

Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson delivered a candid speech on the State of the City, on Feb. 28, 2008. The speech sponsored by City Club of Cleveland highlighted challenges the city faced and solutions proposed and accomplished in the last year.

“I have already moved on,” he joked during the question-answer session indicating his eyes are set on future challenges he intends to conquer. He discussed five core issues revolving around finances, regional economy, education, and public safety.

At fifteen years old Theresa L. Flores crossed a cultural taboo. She developed an innocent crush on an older school mate, off limits because of his ethnicity. When he reciprocated her interest she was overjoyed and naively agreed to take a ride home from school.

He took her to his house instead. “Warning bells went off in my head,” Flores recalls. Smitten, she ignored them and went inside. “I was the new kid in school and wanted to be liked,” she said. No one was home. More warning bells went off in her head. “We are taught to trust people,” she said reasoning with the choice she made.

Flores was raped; something she recalls was catastrophic for a virgin Catholic girl from a good family.

Cleveland: Cheers, whistles and applause erupted at Bruno’s Ristorante on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 as Councilman Joe Santiago defeated an election recall initiated by predecessor Nelson Cintrón Jr.

 

“The real winners are the residents of Ward 14,” said Councilman Santiago to more than 150 supporters crammed in the Italian restaurant Cleveland’s side.

In December of 2007, Cleveland Foundation consultant Dr. Eugenio Yáñez presented several workshops in Cleveland on the savvy of doing business with Latin American countries. Yáñez joined the Cleveland Foundation in July 2007 in an effort to increase the marketability of Cleveland abroad and encourage business partnerships between the Cleveland region and Latin America.

“This is not a hoochie couchie dance,” said Jillina, the chorographer and director of Bellydance Superstars as she described the delicate, sensual movements she had been performing minutes earlier. Standing on a small tabla drum she rendered the crowd breathless with her phenomenal control and exhibition of abdominal muscles.

The Bellydance Superstars performed at the Allen Theatre in Playhouse Square on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007. The large crowed of more than 500 absorbed the show and energetically stormed merchandise bazaar to buy jewelry, hip scarves, and belts.

 

A team of 11 gorgeous women, the Bellydance Superstars, hail from different ethnic backgrounds brought together by the love of dancing. Since forming in 2003 the group has performed 500 concerts in 18 countries, more than 60 television shows to over 100 million viewers, and their popularity is soaring. For good reason too.

Cleveland: Thirteen unique shrines lined the hall. One colorful “ofrenda” beneath each arched window. The luring smell of copal incense filled Josaphart Arts Hall, as visitors strolled leisurely in circles, writing notes to deceased loved ones, lighting candles, and sampling nachos and wine.

    Thanks for sharing, but I’m surprised at the dearth of Spanish language media in the Ohio area. Are there any other reputable outlets for Spanish language media in the area, or is La Prensa really it?

    There are several print magazines, and some radio stations that offer Spanish news. La Prensa is the most established in the region and the largest that serves Ohio.
